Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
  W00-0427
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
Removing
–  Unclip engine cover from engine.
  Note
To disconnect and reconnect the battery, the procedure described in the workshop manual should be strictly adhered to → Chapter
–  Disconnect battery → Chapter.
–  Detach intake hose -1-, connector -2- and hose -3- from air mass meter.

–  Then remove complete air filter housing by unscrewing bolts -4- and -5-.
  Note
For reasons of clarity, the battery and battery carrier are removed in the illustration opposite. The starter can also be installed and removed with the battery and battery carrier fitted.
–  Unbolt cable guide -arrow- from gearbox.
–  Move selector lever to “P” and push selector lever cable -1- off lever/selector shaft -4- using a screwdriver.
  Note
Do not undo the bolt -2-.

–  Unclip circlip -3- from support bracket of selector lever cable and pull out selector lever cable.
  Caution
Do not kink the selector lever cable.
  N37-0781
–  Detach plastic cap -1- from solenoid switch.
–  Unscrew hexagon nut from solenoid switch at terminal 30 -1-.

–  Disconnect terminal 50 connection -2-.
–  Unscrew bolt -1- and stud -2-.

–  Lift starter off gearbox and remove.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal. When doing so, note the following:

To disconnect and connect the battery, the procedure described in the workshop manual should be strictly adhered to → Chapter
–  Reconnect battery.
Tighten threaded connections to specified torques → Chapter.
